ISLAMABAD: The Islamabad Capital Territory Police (ICT) have issued a warning regarding protest rallies scheduled for May 9, emphasizing strict actions against any attempts to disrupt the law.
Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) intends to mark the anniversary of May 9 events with nationwide rallies.
Authorities have clarified that no unauthorized protests or rallies will be permitted in Islamabad, citing Section 144 regulations which prohibit gatherings of four or more individuals.
In a statement on Social Media X (Twitter), the Islamabad Police spokesperson announced that Section 144 is currently enforced in the city, prohibiting gatherings of four or more people.
The spokesperson reiterated that the police will not tolerate any chaos and will take action against law violators. The government has already implemented a ban on all public gatherings in the city to prevent potential violence.
Last year’s May 9 incident, sparked by the arrest of Imran Khan at the Islamabad High Court, led to widespread protests across the country, resulting in property damage and attacks on military facilities by mobs.
Subsequently, the government launched a crackdown on protesters, utilizing footage and cellphone tracking to identify and initiate trials in military courts for those involved. PTI claims over 10,000 of its supporters were detained, whereas the government asserts a significantly lower figure.
