Punjab govt delegates section 144 authority to deputy commissioners

LAHORE: The Punjab Government, by amending the Code of Criminal Procedure 1898, empowered the Deputy Commissioners to enforce Section 144 in their districts from time to time for 30 days.

After the approval of the amendment in the Code of Criminal Procedure 1898 by the Punjab Assembly, the Law Department has issued a gazette notification.

According to the notification, after the amendment, the Secretary of Interior Punjab will now have the authority to implement Section 144 throughout the province for 90 days, while the Cabinet will have the authority to implement Section 144 for more than 90 days.

It should be remembered that earlier, after the approval of the Cabinet, the Home Secretary used to notify the implementation of Section 144.

On the recommendation of the Punjab Home Secretary, the Punjab Government has delegated the authority to implement Section 144 to the Deputy Commissioners, who will be empowered to make timely decisions based on the situation in their respective districts.
