PESHAWAR: The Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) Police have decided to buy thermal drones to improve surveillance during night-time operations and Muharram processions.
Inspector General of Police (IGP) Zulfiqar Hameed said that these drones will help the police monitor movement both during the day and at night. He added that the police will receive the thermal drones this week, and they will be used to strengthen security, especially during Muharram.
The IGP said that advanced weapons, including short machine guns, have already been purchased, and armoured personnel carrier (APC) vehicles have been repaired. More APCs will also be deployed in sensitive areas during Muharram.
Police have also acquired anti-drone technology to counter the increasing threat from terrorists using drones and quadcopters for attacks. Recent months have seen such attacks in the tribal areas, which have caused public concern and protests.

Earlier this week, Amnesty International expressed serious concern over the use of drones by terrorists in KP and urged the Pakistani government to take effective steps to protect citizens from such attacks.
The IGP said that drone use by terrorists is a growing concern and there is a need for proper monitoring tools in all districts. He said the police are working to overcome the shortage of drones and will fill this gap soon.
