President Arif Alvi Approves Justice Qazi Faez Isa as Next Chief Justice

ISLAMABAD: President Arif Alvi has granted approval for the appointment of senior puisne judge Justice Qazi Faez Isa as the next Chief Justice of Pakistan. The appointment, sanctioned under Article 179 of the Constitution, will come into effect on September 17, 2023, following the retirement of the current Chief Justice Umar Atta Bandial on September 16.

Ministry of Law and Justice Issues Notification Confirming the Appointment

Following the President’s decision, the Ministry of Law and Justice issued a notification confirming Justice Isa’s appointment. The notification cited the President’s powers as conferred by clause (3) of Article 175 A, read with Article 177 of the Constitution of the Islamic Republic of Pakistan. It stated, “In exercise of the powers conferred by clause (3) of Article 175 A read with Article 177 of the Constitution of the Islamic Republic of Pakistan, the President of the Islamic Republic of Pakistan is pleased to appoint Hon’ble Mr. Justice Qazi Faez Isa, the most Senior Judge of Supreme Court, as Chief Justice of Pakistan with effect from 17th September, 2023.”

Justice Qazi Faez Isa, upon taking the oath on September 17, will assume the role as the 29th Chief Justice of Pakistan. President Alvi will administer the oath to Justice Isa.

Profile of Justice Qazi Faez Isa

Justice Qazi Faez Isa was born on October 26, 1959, in Quetta. He hails from a distinguished family, with his father, the late Qazi Mohammad Isa of Pishin, being an eminent figure in the Pakistan movement, and his grandfather, Qazi Jalaluddin, having served as the prime minister of Khanate of Kalat in pre-partition India.

Justice Isa’s legal career includes being a member of the Bar of England and Wales in the 1980s and enrolling as an advocate of the Supreme Court from Balochistan. He has amassed over 27 years of experience practicing law before various high courts, the Federal Shariat Court, and the Supreme Court. Additionally, he has served as a member of the Balochistan High Court Bar Association, Sindh High Court Bar Association, and is a Life Member of the Supreme Court Bar Association. Notably, he has held the position of Chief Justice of Balochistan at different periods.

Throughout his career, Justice Isa has been called upon by high courts and the Supreme Court to render his services as amicus curiae and has also conducted international arbitrations. His judgements have consistently reflected his unwavering commitment to upholding the Constitution and the rule of law.

Justice Isa has also pioneered a system for transparent induction of officials and officers in high courts through advertisement.

Justice Isa Takes Oath as Judge of the Supreme Court of Pakistan

On September 5, 2014, Justice Isa took the oath as a judge of the Supreme Court of Pakistan.
