LAHORE: Pakistan Muslim League-N (PML-N) has instructed Maryam Ikram to resign from her assembly membership following significant backlash on social media.
Amidst extensive criticism on social platforms, the PML-N has opted to remove Maryam Ikram from her designated seat in the National Assembly.
Maryam Ikram has been tasked with formally notifying the Election Commission of her resignation before March 19 on behalf of the party leadership.
Media reports indicate that the party leadership has censured the League officials who endorsed Maryam Ikram’s candidacy and has initiated an inquiry into the matter.
Images of her with the PTI flag have been circulating on social media for several days. Despite her previous activity on TikTok and other platforms, she recently aligned herself with the PML-N.
Following Maryam Ikram’s nomination, PML-N sources stated that the situation deteriorated, as reported by media outlets.
President of the Women Wing Punjab, Nosheen Iftikhar, resigned from her position due to a disagreement over the allocation of reserved seats for women. It was reported that Nosheen Iftikhar faced pressure from long-standing PML-N members, with numerous complaints regarding the inclusion of non-party-affiliated women on the list.
In an earlier interview, Maryam Ikram disclosed her middle-class background and lack of political lineage. She emphasized that her appointment as an MNA was based solely on merit, denying any influence or recommendation from others. “I applied through the PML platform, and it was by the will of Allah that I became an MNA,” she affirmed.
Maryam Ikram disavowed any connection to the rumors circulating on social media. She dismissed allegations implicating Federal Minister Attaullah Tarar or Prime Minister’s PS Bader Shehbaz in her appointment as an MNA, asserting, “I have never formally joined the PML-N, though I have supported them on social media and criticized their mistakes.”
According to recent updates, Maryam Ikram has officially informed the Election Commission of her decision to step down from the Assembly seat in writing.
