KARACHI: The Sindh government has extended the deadline for vehicles with Ajrak-themed number plates until August 14 and directed police not to issue any challans for these plates during this period.
Sindh’s Minister for Excise, Taxation and Narcotics Control, Mukesh Kumar Chawla, made the announcement while speaking to the media in Karachi on Monday. He said that Ajrak represents Sindh’s cultural identity and will remain part of the new number plate design.
“Some people seem to have developed an unnecessary fear of Ajrak, but it is a part of our heritage,” Chawla stated, adding that it also acts as a built-in security feature.
The minister explained that although no fines will be issued for the Ajrak number plates until the deadline, other violations—such as riding without a helmet or lacking vehicle documents—will continue to be penalised under normal traffic rules.

He reaffirmed that new digital number plates, introduced under the Safe City project, are mandatory for all vehicles in the province.
Concerns had earlier been raised over the legality and design of the Ajrak plates, which were introduced as part of a cultural initiative. However, the Sindh government defended the move, citing both cultural value and enhanced security features.
