LAHORE: The Punjab government has announced to expand its free School Meal Program to 10 more districts. This move will start in the next financial year and will cost an extra PKR 15 billion.
The School Meal Program was first launched to fight malnutrition and help more children attend school. So far, it has shown good results. Government records say that 55,757 more students have joined government schools since the program began. In its current phase, which cost PKR 4 billion, the program gave out 40 million milk cartons to students to help them stay healthy and focused on learning.
“This program shows our strong commitment to better health and education for children,” said a spokesperson from the Punjab Education Department. “Free meals help reduce hunger and also encourage parents to send their children to school, especially in poor areas.”
Experts say the program works well because it focuses on both food and education. Many children in rural and low-income areas suffer from poor diets, which affect their growth and school performance. The free milk provides key nutrients like calcium and protein, which are important for growing children.
To help fund the expansion, the Punjab government is talking with international partners to get more money and support. “We believe our global partners will support this important investment in our children’s future,” the spokesperson added.

The expansion comes at a time when Pakistan is facing high inflation and rising food prices. Education experts have welcomed the decision. “This is a smart move,” said Dr. Ayesha Khan, an education policy expert in Lahore. “It helps children stay in school and also supports families who are struggling.”
The government will first focus on districts with low school attendance and high poverty. Officials also plan to improve the meals by using local food and offering a better mix of healthy items.
As the next phase begins, the government is hopeful that the program will make a big difference. With more students, better nutrition, and support from international partners, the School Meal Program could play a key role in building a stronger, healthier future for Punjab’s children.
