The Judicial Commission of Pakistan has approved the appointment of Justice Ali Baqar Najafi of the Lahore High Court as a judge of the Supreme Court.
According to media reports, the decision was made during a two-and-a-half-hour-long meeting chaired by Chief Justice of Pakistan Yahya Afridi. Sources say the appointment was approved by a majority vote.
Several other key decisions were also made during the meeting. Retired Justice Maqbool Baqar was approved as a member of the commission from Sindh, while Retired Justice Nazir Lango was approved from the Balochistan High Court.
In addition, Retired Justice Shaukat Aziz Siddiqui from the Islamabad High Court and Retired Justice Shakirullah Jan from the Peshawar High Court were also approved as new members of the Judicial Commission.
Sources further revealed that the commission unanimously agreed to remove previous remarks made about Justice Shujaat Ali Khan. Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) members supported both Justice Ali Baqar Najafi’s appointment and the removal of remarks against Justice Shujaat Ali Khan.
