ISLAMABAD: The Capital Development Authority (CDA) has decided to create car-free zones in parts of the Blue Area and Jinnah Super Market to promote pedestrian-friendly spaces. The plan includes pedestrian-only streets and food stalls.

A meeting chaired by CDA Chairman Muhammad Ali Randhawa approved the project. The CDA will first convert a section of the Blue Area (G-7/F-7) into a pedestrian zone, covering about 800 meters from the new parking plaza to Khyber Plaza. The Jinnah Super Market will also have three small pedestrian areas, including Gol Market.

A parking plaza in the Blue Area, nearing completion, will accommodate 950 vehicles. Visitors will park here before entering the pedestrian zone. To assist movement, electric carts will be introduced, especially for the elderly and children.

On weekends, food stalls from top chains will be set up along the pedestrian track. Recreational facilities will also be added. The CDA plans to improve the aesthetics of the area by standardizing shop signboards, installing benches, and placing separate trash bins. Digital screens will be installed at entry and exit points.

Chairman Randhawa directed that the parking plaza be made operational before the pedestrian tracks are built. He also emphasized a high-standard cleanliness system and enhancements to building facades. The engineering wing has been tasked with preparing cost-effective and attractive designs for the pedestrian tracks.

The CDA believes the project will boost visitor numbers and improve the urban environment. Work is expected to start soon.
