ISLAMABAD: Pakistan and China have taken a step to strengthen their economic ties. Direct cargo flights from Urumqi, China, to Islamabad, Pakistan, have officially started.
The first cargo flight arrived at Islamabad International Airport with over 25 tons of goods. Chief Operating Officer (COO) and Airport Manager Aftab Gilani welcomed the Chinese delegation at the airport.
Airport officials said that, for now, two cargo flights will operate each week. There are plans to increase the number of flights in the near future. COO Aftab Gilani stated that Pakistan and China share a long friendship and strong cooperation.
He said this cargo service will help trade between the two countries and increase revenue and cargo charges for the Pakistan Airports Authority. He also noted that this service will support the Pakistan-China Economic Corridor (CPEC) and improve relations.
Experts believe this cargo service from China could bring big changes to economic growth. It will speed up imports and exports and create new opportunities for small and medium businesses in both countries. Officials say the successful start of this service could lead to similar agreements with other international partners.

In other news, Pakistan’s aviation industry received an update. The British Air Safety Committee held a meeting about restoring Pakistani airlines, including Pakistan International Airlines (PIA) and private carriers.
They have reserved their decision. Sources say the committee will announce its final decision on March 25, 2025. Recently, a British team visited Pakistan and conducted a detailed audit of the Pakistan Civil Aviation Authority, PIA, and other private airlines.
In November 2024, the European Air Safety Agency lifted its ban on Pakistani airlines. If the British committee also approves, PIA will start flights to the UK right away. Aviation experts see this as a positive development for Pakistan’s aviation industry. It could help the country’s economy and improve Pakistan’s reputation globally.
