In a surprising move, New Zealand Cricket has appointed Michael Bracewell as the captain for the upcoming five-match T20I series against Pakistan.

Bracewell, known for his all-round abilities, has not featured in international cricket since March last year. However, he has recently made a comeback to domestic cricket after recovering from injuries, including a ruptured Achilles and a broken finger.

Opportunity Amidst Absences

With star players Kane Williamson and Mitchell Santner unavailable due to their commitments in the Indian Premier League (IPL), Bracewell’s leadership skills come to the forefront. The series in Pakistan serves as crucial preparation for both teams ahead of the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup scheduled for June.

Sam Wells’ Confidence in Bracewell

New Zealand selector Sam Wells expressed his excitement about having Bracewell back in action. Wells believes that the 33-year-old’s return to high-level cricket after a significant injury layoff demonstrates his resilience and commitment. Bracewell’s leadership experience with Wellington, New Zealand A, and New Zealand XI teams positions him well to guide the Kiwi squad during their Pakistan tour.

Missing Stars, Emerging Leaders

The absence of key players such as Trent Boult, Devon Conway, Lockie Ferguson, and others due to IPL commitments opens the door for emerging talents. Hard-hitting opener Finn Allen, seasoned all-rounder Jimmy Neesham, and veteran spinner Ish Sodhi are expected to step up and lead the youthful New Zealand side in what promises to be an exciting series.

And amidst it all, let’s not forget that Kane Williamson continues to dazzle fans with his exceptional fielding skills, taking an absolute stunner!

Let’s take a look at the players who will be representing the Kiwis:

  • Michael Bracewell ©: The captain, making a comeback after a lengthy injury layoff.
  • Finn Allen: A promising hard-hitting opener.
  • Mark Chapman: A versatile middle-order batter.
