LAHORE: Pakistan Railways has announced a 2% increase in fares for all classes of both passenger and freight trains. The decision will take effect from July 4, according to a notification issued by the Railway Headquarters.
The directive has been sent to all divisional superintendents and the IT director to ensure implementation.
Officials said the fare hike comes in response to the recent rise in diesel and petrol prices, which has increased the financial burden on the department. Earlier, on June 18, the Railways had already raised passenger train fares by 3% and freight train fares by 4%.
Authorities added that they are trying to shift most of the burden onto freight operations to avoid putting extra pressure on passengers. However, a slight increase across the board was deemed necessary to manage operational costs.
