Peshawar: About 5 million children in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) are not attending school, according to a recent report.
As per the report, the provincial Education Department’s report on out-of-school children states that 37% of children in the province, totaling 4.92 million, are not receiving education.
The report indicates that over 800,000 children in Peshawar are out of school. Kolai Palas has the highest proportion, with 80,333 children not attending school.
The Education Department notes that 79% of children in Lower Kohistan and Upper Kohistan are out of school, while Upper Chitral has the lowest rate at 10%.
Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Education Minister Faisal Tarakai stated that more than 4.8 million boys and girls are not in school. The government is working to enroll them. Last year, 1.3 million children were admitted to schools, and this year, the target is to enroll 1 million more.

In other news, the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa government has announced free transport for female students in government schools in remote areas to promote girls’ education.

This transport service will be available for girls in grades 6, 7, and 8 whose homes are 1.5 kilometers or more from their school.
The provincial government has sent a letter to female district officers in the relevant districts, instructing them to discuss the initiative with parents and obtain their consent. The service will be provided in Lower Kohistan, Upper Kohistan, Kolai Palas, Torghar, Hangu, Dera Ismail Khan, Lakki Marwat, Charsadda, Kohat, and Bannu.
The letter specifies that the service will benefit girls in grades 6, 7, and 8, those unable to attend school due to distance, and new students admitted to grade 6.
