KARACHI: The Sindh Education Department announced that educational institutions across the province will remain closed on January 28 in observance of Shab-e-Mairaj.
As per the notification issued by the department, the holiday has been declared to commemorate Shab-e-Miraj, the Night of Ascent, with deep religious fervor.
Every year, on the 27th of Rajab (according to the Lunar calendar), Muslims observe Shab-e-Mairaj to honor the Isra (journey) and Mairaj (ascension) of Prophet Muhammad (Peace Be Upon Him). On this night, the Prophet (PBUH) was taken on a miraculous journey to meet Allah Almighty, traversing the seven heavens on the celestial steed named ‘al-Buraq’.

It was on this Night of Ascent that Allah Almighty ordained the five daily Salat (Prayers) as an obligatory act for all Muslims.
On this sacred night, the faithful gather in mosques after Isha to offer special prayers, which continue until Fajr. Additionally, various gatherings and Mahafil-e-Naat are organized to celebrate the occasion.
Homes, streets, and especially mosques are adorned with colorful pennants and buntings, while at night, they are illuminated with electric lights, candles, or oil lamps.
Moreover, people visit the graves of their loved ones, praying for Allah Almighty’s blessings and mercy for the departed souls.
