RAWALPINDI: The School Education Department in Punjab has introduced new subject groups for the matriculation exams, providing students with different options beyond the traditional streams of science and arts. The new courses will be implemented from this year.
Secretary School Education Punjab Khalid Naeem Wattoo announced that students will now be able to choose subjects like Health Sciences, Agriculture, Information Technology (IT), and Entrepreneurship.
The move is the biggest change in Pakistan’s education system in 70 years. The new groups aim to align the curriculum with international standards and provide students with more practical and career-oriented options.
Speaking to the Private tv TV channel, Khalid Naeem Wattoo said, “We have introduced four new groups: Agriculture, IT, Fashion Designing, and Health Sciences. In these subjects, 30 marks will be reserved for theory and 40 marks for practical.”

He added that no additional teachers will be required to introduce these new groups. Instead, existing teachers will be trained according to the new curriculum.
“We already have engineering and computer teachers. We will train our existing teachers to meet the requirements of these new subjects,” explained Wattoo.
The total number of matriculation exams will be 1,100, and the new subjects will be included within the existing framework.
Students will choose their subject groups at the beginning of the ninth grade so that they can focus on their chosen areas throughout their secondary education.
