KARACHI: Sindh Senior Minister Sharjeel Inam Memon has said that the provincial government has made strict security arrangements for the peaceful observance of 8th, 9th, and 10th Muharram across the province.
While addressing a press conference, he said that 49,662 police personnel will be on duty in Karachi, Hyderabad, Sukkur, Larkana, Mirpurkhas, and Shaheed Benazirabad from 8th Muharram to Ashura. The deployment aims to ensure peace and prevent any untoward incidents during the mourning period.
He added that 14,546 police personnel will be deployed for the security of majalis, while 35,116 officers will guard Muharram processions. Additionally, over 14,000 extra personnel have been assigned for overall event security.
The minister said that Sindh Chief Minister Murad Ali Shah recently held meetings with religious scholars from various schools of thought to discuss and review the security plan for Muharram.
Ban on rickshaws on major roads defended:
Sharjeel Memon, who also oversees the Information, Transport, and Mass Transit departments, defended the ban on rickshaws on 11 main roads of Karachi, saying it was necessary for better traffic flow and public convenience.

He clarified that the ban, issued through a notification on April 15 by the Karachi Commissioner, is only for selected major roads and not the entire city. The measure was taken under the Sindh Motor Vehicle Ordinance, 1965.
He questioned whether rickshaws are allowed to operate on major roads in other major cities of the country.
Over 93,000 teachers hired across Sindh:
Talking about the education sector, Mr. Memon said the Sindh government has appointed 93,118 teachers, including 31,075 women. He said 2,100 teachers were hired under the minority quota, while 1,330 jobs were given to differently-abled persons.

He said the hiring process was carried out transparently through the Sukkur IBA test, leaving no space for criticism.
Due to these efforts, 5,000 closed government schools have been reopened. Currently, 5.5 million students are enrolled in government schools, 4 million in private schools, and 1 million in Sindh Education Foundation schools.
Sharjeel Memon also said that the Sindh government has taken significant steps in health, energy, infrastructure, and climate change to improve public services across the province.
