ISLAMABAD: The New Gwadar International Airport (NGIA), eagerly awaited, is scheduled for inauguration on December 30, 2024, as directed by Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, according to a report by a private TV channel.

As per report, Pakistan International Airlines (PIA), the national carrier, will operate the airport’s inaugural commercial flight, representing a key milestone in regional connectivity.

Final preparations are in progress, with a recent five-hour meeting between PIA and the Airports Authority finalizing essential operational matters.

Built with $246 million in Chinese investment, the airport is anticipated to enhance trade and tourism in the region. In its first year, no fees will be charged to PIA, a move intended to support operational stability.

Reports say that PIA will send staff and necessary equipment, including check-in systems, in the coming days to ensure smooth operations from the first day.

With a large runway and a modern terminal building, the airport can accommodate all types of large aircraft.

Airport is anticipated to greatly enhance trade and economic development in the region, establishing Gwadar as a vital hub for commerce and connectivity.

What is the area of the New Gwadar International Airport?

New Gwadar International Airport (NGIA), to be built across an area of 4,300 acres, will be one of the biggest in Pakistan and will also become the nation’s second airport capable of handling A380 aircraft upon its commissioning in 2022.

It is expected to stimulate development in the Gwadar Peninsula and boost trade between Pakistan and China. Airport will operate under an open sky policy and will be developed under the guidance of the Pakistan Civil Aviation Authority (PCAA).
