Punjab government decides to upgrade private sector workshops

ISLAMABAD: The Punjab government has unveiled an ambitious plan to upgrade private sector workshops, in which modern equipment will be provided to the workshops.

A meeting chaired by Punjab Senior Minister Marriyum Aurangzeb decided to upgrade the workshops of the private sector.

Marriyum Aurangzeb said in the meeting that, for the first time in Punjab, it has been decided to upgrade private sector workshops.

According to the decision of the meeting, 50 private workshops will be provided with modern equipment in the first phase. The Punjab government will give 80 percent interest-free loans, and the workshop owner will contribute only 20 percent.

The decision states that workshops equipped with modern equipment will be authorized for the fitness of vehicles. The decision also directed the Transport Department to speed up the fitness certification of vehicles owned by transport companies.

According to the decision, public transport vehicles and trucks will be monitored under a comprehensive emission testing control program. It has been stated in the decision that the route permits of vehicles operating on Lahore routes will be canceled if they fail to comply after the deadline.

Additionally, it has been decided to check vehicles outside Lahore to prevent smog. Under this decision, 50,000 buses have already begun to be checked outside Lahore. The EPA and traffic police have been entrusted with the responsibility of monitoring.

Marriyum Aurangzeb also informed the meeting that a tree plantation drive is being initiated in 478 schools in Lahore with available open spaces.

She also directed that children be educated about this by ensuring the inclusion of environmental issues in the curriculum. Marriyum Aurangzeb stated that a multi-sectoral monitoring observatory will be set up to review the implementation of environmental improvement goals.

It was also decided in the meeting to prepare a comprehensive program to change public attitudes and mindsets.
