FBR introduces 10% withholding tax on wedding ceremonies

ISLAMABAD: Federal Board of Revenue (FBR) has imposed a withholding tax on marriage halls, which will be collected separately from the booking parties instead of the hall owners.

As per private tv channel report, a delegation of the Marriage Hall Association met FBR officials in Karachi. The marriage hall owners and the FBR reached an agreement on charging a 10 percent withholding tax on wedding ceremonies.

According to Rana Rais, President of the Marriage Hall Association, a 10 percent withholding tax will be charged to the booking party for the ceremony in the wedding hall.

The President of the Marriage Hall Association further stated that the decision to collect the withholding tax was taken under the direction of FBR officials.

In addition to the wedding hall rent, a 10 percent withholding tax will also be charged. The withholding tax amount has no connection with the wedding hall owners. Citizens arranging wedding ceremonies are requested to comply with the FBR policy on the issue of withholding tax.

It should be noted that the annual budget for the financial year 2024–25, presented by the government, included a proposal to impose a 10 percent withholding tax on wedding ceremonies.

In this regard, Chief Commissioner Inland Revenue Regional Tax Office Rawalpindi, Aftab Ahmed Khan, clarified that the 10 percent withholding tax has been imposed by the federal government on customers and not on wedding halls.

He added that due to the new tax, the public is unaware of it, which is causing problems. The FBR will soon launch an awareness campaign in this regard.
