ISLAMABAD: In light of the approaching Laylat-ul-Qadr, the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) announced the cancellation of its planned “grand power show” scheduled for April 6, 2024, at Islamabad’s Parade Ground.

PTI Chairman Barrister Gohar Ali Khan conveyed this decision in a post on X, emphasizing the significance of Laylat-ul-Qadr, a blessed night observed during the last ten days of Ramadan.

Last month, PTI had announced the rally at Parade Ground to advocate for the release of its founder, who has been detained since August last year on various charges, including corruption and divulging state secrets.

The Islamabad High Court (IHC) had previously instructed authorities to permit PTI’s public gathering in the capital, with Chief Justice Aamer Farooq stating on March 27 that the right to assemble cannot be denied.

The decision to cancel the rally follows the IHC’s recent suspension of sentences against Khan and Bushra in the Toshakhana case, providing a significant legal relief to the party. Chief Justice Aamer Farooq stated that the appeal against the conviction would be scheduled for a hearing after the Eid holidays.

In January, Accountability Court Judge Muhammad Bashir had sentenced Khan and Bushra to 14 years in prison each, along with hefty fines, and had also disqualified Khan from holding public office for ten years.
