ISLAMABAD: Hafiz Naeem ur Rehman has been chosen as the new leader, known as Ameer, of Jamaat-e-Islami (JI) Pakistan for a five-year term.

The announcement came during a press conference at Mansoorah on Thursday, led by Rashid Naseem, the head of JI Election Commission, along with other members of the Election Cell.

Naseem informed the media that a majority of JI members, referred to as Rukn, voted in favor of Hafiz Naeem to assume leadership of Jamaat-e-Islami Pakistan. Hafiz Naeem, who is a professional engineer and currently serving as the Ameer of the JI Karachi chapter, will hold the position until April 8, 2029.

Prior to his national political involvement, Naeem was actively engaged in student politics and held the position of elected Nazim-e-Aaala (president) of the Islami Jamiat Tulaba. Naseem disclosed that more than 82 percent of JI members participated in the election.

The Jamaat-e-Islami comprises over 45,000 members, including around 6,000 women, who partake in the selection of the Ameer. The JI Election Commission, an elected body itself, oversees the Ameer election process. Consisting of Rashid Naseem as the head, Qudratullah Butt as the Secretary, and Members Dr. Ata-ur-Rehman, Sardar Zafar Hussain, and Engineer Akhlaq Ahmed, the commission was specifically elected by the JI Majlise Shura to conduct the Ameer election.

Naseem confirmed that the commission’s responsibilities concluded with the successful election of the Ameer. The JI Shura, which consists of over 100 elected members, proposed three names for consideration: the current Ameer Sirajul Haq, Vice-Ameer Liaquat Baloch, and Hafiz Naeem, with members having the liberty to suggest additional names.

It’s worth noting that Jamaat-e-Islami is the only political party in Pakistan conducting regular intra-party elections since its inception in 1941.

The party’s founding Ameer was Syed Maududi, followed by Mian Tufail Muhammad, Qazi Hussain Ahmad, Syed Munawar Hassan, and Sirajul Haq, who served as the second, third, fourth, and fifth Ameer of the JI, respectively.
