ISLAMABAD: Chairman of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), Barrister Gohar Ali Khan, stated on Saturday that Senator Ali Zafar has been appointed as the opposition leader in the Senate, in accordance with the decision made by the party’s founding chairman, Imran Khan. Additionally, Aun Abbas has been designated as the parliamentary leader in the Upper House of Parliament.
During a media briefing in Rawalpindi, Gohar addressed concerns regarding the Senate chairman and deputy chairman elections, highlighting that these elections should not proceed due to the incomplete electoral college resulting from the absence of Senate elections in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.
He emphasized the necessity of holding elections in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa prior to electing the chairman and deputy chairman, stressing that senators must take their seats in the House first.
Gohar voiced grievances about alleged discrimination against his party in the Senate elections, recalling their previous demands to refrain from holding elections for chief minister, NA speaker, deputy speaker, and prime minister positions due to the incomplete electoral college.
The PTI leader expressed readiness to fulfill the opposition’s role in the National Assembly under the condition that unconstitutional and illegal actions against party candidates cease, preventing their majority from being reduced to a minority.
He cautioned against the trend of defeating successful candidates from his party, warning that it would disrupt the balance in parliament.
Furthermore, he urged the Election Commission of Pakistan to halt recounting processes that portray PTI candidates as defeated, accusing the electoral body of failing to fulfill its constitutional obligations.
