ISLAMABAD: Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif reiterated on Thursday that the government plans to conduct an investigation into the matter of threatening letters containing suspicious powder received by several judges, including Chief Justice Qazi Faez Isa.
Presiding over a federal cabinet meeting in Islamabad, Shehbaz emphasized that the issue should not be politicized.
He made these remarks in light of the recent reception of threatening letters by multiple judges, including those serving in the Supreme Court, Islamabad High Court, and Lahore High Court.
According to Private TV Channel Report , judges at the Supreme Court, including CJP Isa, Justice Athar Minallah, Justice Jamal Khan Mandokhail, and Justice Aminuddin Khan, received such letters on Wednesday.
Prior to this, eight judges from the Islamabad High Court, including Chief Justice Aamer Farooq, received “suspected anthrax-laced letters” on Monday, while four judges from the Lahore High Court, including Justice Shujaat Ali Khan, Justice Shahid Bilal Hasan, Justice Alia Neelum, and Justice Abid Aziz Sheikh, were sent similar letters on Wednesday.
The issue of threatening letters emerged a day after the Supreme Court took suo motu notice of allegations made by the chief justice of the Islamabad High Court and other judges against intelligence agencies.
Regarding the government’s efforts to address the country’s economic challenges, the Prime Minister mentioned that the International Monetary Fund (IMF) is expected to disburse the final tranche of $1.1 billion from its $3 billion Stand-By Arrangement with Islamabad this month.
However, Shehbaz noted that Finance Minister Muhammad Aurangzeb would engage with the IMF for another loan, highlighting that the conditions for the IMF program would be challenging.
On the topic of privatization, Shehbaz assured the full implementation of the privatization schedule for Pakistan International Airlines (PIA). Additionally, he mentioned that a delegation from a Turkish company would visit Pakistan to discuss the outsourcing of the country’s airports.
Furthermore, the Prime Minister emphasized that the federal government would collaborate with provincial authorities to ensure comprehensive security for Chinese nationals in the country.
He stressed the importance of providing robust security for Chinese citizens, particularly in light of the recent deadly suicide attack in Shangla’s Besham city, which resulted in the deaths of six people, including five Chinese engineers.
