ISLAMABAD: Hammad Azhar, a senior leader of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), announced his resignation from the positions of secretary-general and acting president of PTI Punjab chapter on Wednesday. He cited his inability to effectively lead the party due to legal challenges and the constraints of media representation, referring to what he described as “fabricated terrorism cases.”
Azhar, who previously held a ministerial position during PTI’s governance, submitted his resignation letter to PTI Chairman Gohar Ali Khan and Secretary-General Omar Ayub Khan. He expressed the belief that the party would benefit from leadership that can actively engage on the ground, contrasting with his own limitations imposed by legal proceedings, which have led him to remain discreet.
In his letter, he articulated that continuing in his current capacity would be self-serving, acknowledging his inability to represent the party adequately in media appearances. He emphasized the necessity for leadership in Punjab that can openly interact with the public and directly communicate with the founding chairman, Imran Khan, a privilege he lacks.
Azhar reflected on the challenges faced by PTI in Punjab, characterizing it as enduring the pressures of a regime hostile to the party’s interests. He deplored the oppression experienced by numerous PTI members, including arrests, torture, and coerced departures from the party, particularly following incidents subsequent to Imran Khan’s arrest on May 9.
Furthermore, Azhar highlighted his personal struggles, including facing multiple “false” terrorism charges and being banned from electronic media. He recounted instances of raids on his residence and harassment of his family since May 2023, during which time he operated from undisclosed locations to continue his party duties.
The letter also touched upon broader political issues, such as the ban on PTI’s political gatherings and the alleged electoral irregularities during the February 8 general election. Despite setbacks, he acknowledged PTI’s resilience and its ability to maintain success despite challenges.
In conclusion, Azhar stated that his resignation was a carefully considered decision driven by his concern for the party’s welfare, which he has dedicated over a decade to serving. He expressed his intention to remain committed to PTI’s ideals and continue contributing as a loyal member.
