ISLAMABAD: Barrister Gohar Ali Khan, the Chairman of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), asserted on Wednesday that any form of interference in the judiciary would not be tolerated under any circumstances.
He stressed the importance of having independent judges in the judiciary who can make decisions without fear. Speaking to reporters outside the Islamabad High Court, he emphasized that safeguarding the judiciary’s independence is the responsibility of the Supreme Court.
Regarding the concerning issue of letters containing powder received by judges, he urged authorities to take decisive action, emphasizing the seriousness of the matter and the need for a thorough investigation.
Expressing optimism in the Supreme Court’s handling of its constitutional duties, Barrister Gohar welcomed the court’s suo motu notice on the matter and suggested that the court itself should conduct an investigation into the letters.
He suggested that the commission formed by the government should possess powers akin to civil judges, and urged the Supreme Court to issue orders to curb interference.
Responding to inquiries, he mentioned a desire for reconciliation but stated resistance against those who allegedly stole his party’s mandate. He noted their presence in parliament without resorting to mass resignations, boycotts, or sit-ins despite claims of stolen mandates by parties like PMLN, PPP, and MQM.
Regarding the recent meeting of like-minded parties, he mentioned their agreement on a draft emphasizing the importance of non-interference in public mandates and the eradication of electoral rigging. Additionally, they agreed to peacefully conduct public meetings nationwide.
Barrister Gohar reiterated the desire for an elected government to complete its term but criticized the current regime, questioning its legitimacy. He recounted instances where Shehbaz Sharif, upon assuming the role of prime minister, refrained from thanking others, suggesting a lack of elected status. Similarly, he noted the absence of congratulations from figures like Asif Ali Zardari.
