Sardar Ayaz Sadiq Elected as National Assembly Speaker Amidst Opposition Protests

ISLAMABAD: Sardar Ayaz Sadiq of the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) has secured the position of National Assembly speaker, while Syed Ghulam Mustafa Shah from the Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) has been elected as the deputy speaker amidst opposition lawmakers’ protests.

Sadiq now assumes the role of the 23rd speaker of the lower house of parliament, having garnered 199 votes, surpassing the candidacy of Malik Aamir Dogar from the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) and Sunni Ittehad Council (SIC), who secured 91 votes. Following suit, Shah received 197 votes, defeating Junaid Akbar with 92 votes.

The outgoing speaker, Raja Parvez Ashraf, administered the oath to Sadiq, who then administered the oath to Shah.

Expressing gratitude, the newly-elected speaker acknowledged the confidence placed in his leadership by leaders of major political parties.

Addressing the assembly, Sadiq pledged to govern the house with fairness and thanked Allah (SWT) for his third term in office, as well as acknowledging the nomination by PML-N leader Nawaz Sharif.
