LAHORE: Malik Muhammad Ahmad Khan of the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) has secured the position of the new Speaker of the Punjab Assembly. The new leader of the House garnered 224 votes out of the 322 cast during the ballot.
The session of the Punjab Assembly convened on Saturday, chaired by Speaker Sabatin Khan.
Upon the arrival of PML-N nominee Punjab Maryam Nawaz in the House, both members of the Sunni Ittehad Council and PML-N raised slogans.
During the session, four additional newly elected members of the Punjab Assembly were sworn in.
Following the Maghrib prayer break, the process of electing a new speaker commenced. Three polling booths were designated for this purpose, enabling members to participate in secret balloting.
Malik Muhammad Ahmad Khan stood as the PML-N’s candidate for Speaker of the Punjab Assembly, while Ahmad Khan Bhachar represented the Sunni Ittehad Council.
The election for Deputy Speaker witnessed a contest between PML-N’s Zahiraqebal and Sunni Ittehad Council’s Moin Riaz Qureshi. Speaker Sabtain Khan announced the results.
