ISLAMABAD: The Capital Development Authority (CDA) has halved water supply to four residential sectors of Islamabad due to the initiation of annual de-silting operations at Khanpur canal.

Announced on Wednesday, the CDA stated that water supply from Khanpur Dam would be suspended for all consumers until the end of this month.

For sectors G-10, G-11, F-10, and F-11, the water supply directorate of CDA will arrange water from Simly Dam and Sangjani Water Works as an alternative. However, these sectors will undergo water rationing until the de-silting work at Khanpur canal is completed.

During the next two weeks, these sectors will receive two million gallons per day (MGD) of water instead of the usual four MGD. The CDA spokesperson mentioned that the de-silting work at Khanpur Dam aims to ensure ample water supply to residents during the upcoming summer season, with completion expected by the end of this month.

Due to insufficient rainfall and prolonged dry weather, the water levels at Simly Dam and Khanpur Dam have decreased by 50 and 21 percent respectively. Consequently, the water supply from Khanpur Dam to Islamabad has dropped from 10 MGD to four MGD.

Given the reduced water supply to Islamabad, the CDA’s water tanker service has been placed on high alert to promptly address consumer complaints. Additionally, it has been reported that private tanker owners have raised their rates by 50 percent, taking advantage of the situation.
