ISLAMABAD: The federal government declared Friday that February 5, known as Kashmir Day, will be observed as a national holiday.
According to a notification from the Cabinet Division, a one-minute silence will be observed at 10 am on that day.
In Pakistan, February 5 is marked annually as Kashmir Day to express solidarity and support for the people of Indian Illegally Occupied Jammu and Kashmir (IIOJK).
The Kashmir issue remains a contentious point between Pakistan and India, with Islamabad consistently urging the international community to facilitate a plebiscite on the disputed territory.
The conflict gained global attention following Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s unilateral decision to revoke Article 370 of the Indian Constitution, which granted special status to the IIOJK, on August 5, 2019.
Pakistan has reiterated that normalizing ties with its nuclear neighbor is contingent upon the restoration of Kashmir’s special status.
