Babar Azam Steps Down as Pakistan Cricket Captain Across All Formats

ISLAMABAD: Babar Azam has declared his resignation as the captain of the national team across all formats, concluding his lengthy tenure in the leadership role after a disappointing World Cup campaign.

The former skipper had faced criticism for several months following Pakistan’s lackluster performance in the Asia Cup, which persisted during the World Cup, resulting in an early exit before reaching the semi-finals.

Shortly after a meeting with Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) Management Committee Chairman Zaka Ashraf at Lahore’s Gaddafi Stadium, Babar announced his decision. Sources indicated that he was offered the captaincy for Test matches but declined the offer.

Reflecting on his initial appointment as captain for the white-ball format, Babar recounted vivid memories of that moment, acknowledging the immense responsibility that came with the role.

“In the last four years, I’ve encountered numerous highs and lows both on and off the field, but I’ve consistently strived to uphold Pakistan’s honor and reputation in the cricketing realm,” Babar expressed in a statement on X, previously known as Twitter.
