Lahore Court Declares Moonis Elahi Absconder in Development Project Scandal

LAHORE: Moonis Elahi, the son of PTI President Parvez Elahi, was officially declared an absconder on Monday by a Lahore accountability court in a case related to allegations of receiving substantial kickbacks in development projects.

The National Accountability Bureau (NAB) has accused Moonis of misappropriating funds in various development initiatives and initiated proceedings on October 6 to designate former federal minister Moonis Elahi as a proclaimed offender, citing his evasion of arrest and legal processes.

Moonis, who left the country last year during the crackdown on the PTI, is confronted with multiple corruption and money laundering cases filed against him by the Federal Investigation Agency, the Anti-Corruption Establishment, and NAB.

During a hearing presided over by Judge Naseem Ahmad Virk today, the NAB prosecutor, Waris Ali Janjua, was instructed by the court to commence the process of seizing the former federal minister’s properties.

Janjua informed the court, “Neither did he [Moonis] surrender for arrest nor did he join the investigation.”

On July 22, 2023, Moonis was also declared a fugitive in a money laundering case by a Lahore district court due to his consistent absence from proceedings in the case filed by the FIA.

The district court has initiated the process of freezing his assets and bank accounts, as well as revoking his computerized national identity card (CNIC), passport, and bank accounts.

Both Moonis and his father Parvez are among several PTI leaders and workers facing legal challenges as a result of the state’s crackdown on the PTI leadership following the May 9 riots.
