KARACHI: The Sindh government has announced subsidies for farmers on fertilizers and seeds across province, according to a statement.
The decision was made during a meeting led by Chief Minister Murad Ali Shah, involving the agriculture, food, and irrigation departments.
In the meeting, CM Shah said the government plans to improve agriculture in the province through initiatives like farm mechanization and subsidies for wheat and rice crops. He asked the agriculture department to create a four-year plan for small farmers.
As per the details, Shah also directed the agriculture, food, and irrigation departments to work together to inform farmers about new technology, water availability, and modern farming methods. He stressed the importance of farmers knowing about water availability to plan their crops better.
Additionally, CM Shah suggested introducing laser land leveling and Manual Seeder Hand Pusher for small farmers with 1 to 25 acres of land. He proposed offering land leveling on a rental basis. “Using laser technology for land leveling can save 20 to 30 percent of irrigation water,” he said.
This could increase crop yields by 6 to 10 percent, reduce irrigation time by 50 percent, and boost farmers’ income by 20 percent. It would also help prevent waterlogging, salinity, and ensure better use of agricultural inputs.
