KARACHI: In a significant gesture coinciding with Pakistan’s 76th Independence Day festivities, global music streaming giant Spotify has unveiled its plans to honor the esteemed legacy of Pakistan’s iconic singer, Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan.

The revered Sufi music maestro is set to be commemorated through an upgraded edition of the playlist, ‘This is Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan,’ offering an enhanced auditory experience that seamlessly blends his timeless classics with contemporary genres.

A press release issued on Friday conveyed that this revamped playlist pays a fitting tribute to Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan by fusing his perennial hits with modern musical styles, resulting in captivating compositions destined to captivate audiences. The playlist, which has been curated to celebrate his enduring influence, stands as a testament to his musical genius that continues to resonate even after more than two decades since his passing.

Notably, Spotify’s data reinforces Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan’s continued prominence, positioning him as the fourth most streamed Pakistani artist on the platform this year. His compositions have managed to transcend generations, inspiring listeners and artists alike. Tracks like ‘Yeh Jo Halka Halka Suroor Hai,’ ‘Afreen Afreen,’ ‘Mustt Mustt,’ and ‘The Long Road’ featuring Eddie Vedder of Pearl Jam fame, alongside his collaborations with renowned international producer Peter Gabriel, constitute some of his most sought-after works.

Spotify underscores Khan’s enduring impact on an array of musical interpretations, exemplified by the ongoing creation of covers and remakes of his original tracks. Among the contemporary renditions that have gained substantial traction are ‘Lut Gaye,’ ‘Mere Rashke Qamar,’ ‘Kali Kali Zulfon Ke,’ ‘Mere Baad Kisko Sataoge,’ and ‘Dekhte Dekhte’ – these top five streamed remakes are a testament to his enduring influence.

The streaming giant’s data highlights that Khan’s legacy is enthusiastically embraced by the younger demographic, with a noteworthy 37% of his listeners aged between 18 and 22 years old. Following closely are listeners aged 23 to 27, constituting 24% of his audience, while those aged 28 to 34 and under 18 years of age make up 14% each, collectively forming a diverse and dedicated listenership.

In a broader context, the global monthly listenership for Nusrat’s compositions has surged beyond 5 million this year. The list of top countries contributing to the streams of his tracks prominently includes India, the United States, the United Kingdom, Canada, and Australia.
