In a recent interview with Cosmopolitan, Yeri, a member of the popular K-pop group Red Velvet, opened up about her approach to managing public perception and her passion for acting.
The talented artist also shed light on her role as the ruthless queen bee in the drama series “Bitch x Rich,” discussing the challenges she faced in portraying a character that starkly contrasts her own personality.
Yeri expressed her desire to expand her acting repertoire, stating, “I took on this drama to explore new dimensions in my acting. The character I played was something I had never done before, which surprised many people.
While delivering my lines, I focused on my tone, speed, and rhythm. Instead of a carefree kid, I had to embody a princess-like figure—an authoritative character who speaks slowly and exerts power over others. Since this character is the complete opposite of me, I was concerned about effectively portraying that image.”
The multi-talented artist also delved into the disparities between her experiences as an idol and an actress. “As a member of Red Velvet, I have been promoting for a long time and have achieved success with numerous hit songs. I am instantly recognized wherever I go. However, when it comes to acting, I am a complete rookie. Yet, I find great joy in that. Acting allows me to learn and grow tremendously. Moreover, I appreciate the collaborative nature of this profession, where I can work closely with the director, assistant director, filming director, and lighting director. It creates a friendly and supportive environment, which I truly enjoy. Even people I meet for the first time on set quickly become like family after spending two to three months together.”
Yeri candidly revealed that she used to be significantly impacted by public perception, but she has since learned to navigate it more effectively.
She remarked, “In this industry, even the slightest change in my eyebrow shape can prompt questions from people about why I opted for angled eyebrows when they think straight eyebrows suit me better.
In the past, such comments bothered me. I lacked self-awareness and a strong sense of self. I would contemplate whether I should conform to others’ expectations and only sport straight eyebrows.
However, I realized that this approach amounted to living my life for others, rather than for myself. Although I struggled with this issue, particularly since I debuted at a young age, I have grown older and come to prioritize living life on my own terms.
I strive to pursue what I genuinely desire. Consequently, I no longer pay heed to thoughtless criticisms from anonymous individuals.”
