KARACHI: The All Karachi Traders Union said that the Eidul Fitr 2025 sale season was disappointing for the third year in a row. Because of this, 60 percent of the traders’ goods remained unsold.
The union’s president, Atiq Mir, shared that 40,000 shopkeepers from 200 markets in Karachi brought in goods worth 40 billion rupees for the Eid season and stored them in warehouses.
However, only 15 billion rupees worth of goods were sold. This is 25 percent less than last year, and traders are now facing problems paying for goods bought on credit.
Atiq Mir explained that inflation, low buying power, and security issues affected Eid shopping in a bad way. Limited income and high prices have taken away the Eid joy for poor people. He said that shopping was mostly limited to ready-made clothes for women and children, shoes, artificial jewelry, and cheap decorative items.

The president of the traders’ union noted that 2015 was the best year for Eid sales in Karachi, with goods worth 70 billion rupees sold. But over the last ten years, sales have dropped from 70 billion to just 15 billion rupees.
He believes the city has the potential for 100 billion rupees in Eid shopping, but the weak economy has made things hard for traders. Traders said they waited for customers until Chand Raat, but sales were still not good.
This shows that to bring back the excitement of Eid like in the past, the economy needs to improve, and people’s buying power must get better.
