Peshawar: The Khyber Pakhtunkhwa government has launched a free solar panel scheme to support low-income households struggling with high electricity costs and frequent power outages.
Chief Minister Ali Amin Gandapur announced that under this scheme, 130,000 households will receive solar systems. The program is specifically for families registered in the Ehsaas Program and Benazir Income Support Program.
Two Tiers of the Scheme
The scheme has two categories:
- First Tier: Households using up to 100 units of electricity will receive solar systems with zero markup.
- Second Tier: Households using up to 200 units will get solar systems with 50% cost-sharing and a mutually agreed markup.
Eligibility Criteria
The scheme is aimed at economically disadvantaged families, with preference given to:
- Widows, divorced women, orphans, and married couples
- Minority communities and individuals with disabilities
- Families displaced due to temporary circumstances
If the number of applications exceeds the available quota, beneficiaries will be selected through a draw.

First Phase Distribution
In the first phase, 32,500 families will receive solar systems through a draw. Areas with little or no electricity will be prioritized. The selected families will get a solar panel, controller, bulbs, a fan, and a battery.
Chief Minister’s Remarks
Chief Minister Gandapur said the solar scheme is a solution to rising electricity costs and load shedding in the province. He emphasized that the distribution will be based on merit, and all MPAs have been informed that the selection will be transparent.
“The competition should be based on performance. KP has always led in this, and I challenge everyone on performance,” he added.
