The federal cabinet has approved the closure of 6 institutions under the Ministry of Science and Technology and the merger of 4 others.
According to sources, it has been decided to keep the 6 institutions operational with reduced staff. A plan for the right-sizing of various institutions is to be shared by January 20.
Government sources say that NUST has been instructed to improve quality and present a plan to establish itself in 100 universities. The National University of Technology has been asked to submit a plan to achieve self-sufficiency within five years.
Sources also mentioned that the proposal to close the Council for Works and Housing Research and the Pakistan Council for Science and Technology is under consideration. It is suggested that the Pakistan Council for Renewable Energy Technologies merge with the National Institute of Electronics and other related institutions.

The Pakistan Standards and Quality Control Authority and the Pakistan Engineering Council have been proposed for digitization. The Pakistan Halal Authority and the Pakistan Council for Scientific and Industrial Research are to undergo third-party evaluations. Additionally, a proposal has been made to reduce the Ministry’s staff by 50%.
