ISLAMABAD: Ahmed Irfan Aslam, the Caretaker Law Minister, will lead a cabinet committee formed to scrutinize and probe the violent incidents that occurred on May 9, 2023, Saturday.
Under the directives of Prime Minister Anwaar-ul-Haq Kakar, this cabinet body’s objective is to identify the masterminds, orchestrators, facilitators, and perpetrators responsible for the acts of violence, including attacks on military installations on that day.
The committee will also assess both the immediate and enduring effects of the May 9 incidents. It has a mandate to submit its report within 14 days and provide recommendations to prevent such occurrences in the future.
The Cabinet Division has released an official notification announcing the establishment of this committee. As per the notification, the Ministry of Interior will extend support to the secretariat of the cabinet committee.
In a previous update, on September 20, 2023, Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Investigation Anoosh Masood had stated that Imran Khan, the founder of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), along with others implicated in the investigation concerning the May 9 riots, were charged with “criminal conspiracy.”
During a press conference in Lahore, she highlighted that nine additional sections related to treason had been included in the charges against all suspects, including Khan, in connection with the vandalism and violence following the arrest of the former prime minister in the controversial £190 million National Crime Agency (NCA) UK settlement case on May 9.
The investigation official further emphasized discovering evidence indicating incitement of mutiny and plotting vandalism against the PTI chief.
