The government of Gilgit-Baltistan has announced a public holiday on February 6th following the passing of Prince Karim Aga Khan, the spiritual leader of the Ismaili community. According to a government notification, all government offices, educational institutions, and business centers will remain closed on that day.

Prince Karim Aga Khan, the fourth Aga Khan, became the leader of the Ismaili Muslims in 1957 after the death of his grandfather, Sir Sultan Muhammad Shah Aga Khan. He was well-known not only as the spiritual leader of the Ismailis but also for his global development and welfare work. Through the Aga Khan Development Network (AKDN), he initiated numerous projects in education, health, culture, and economic development, benefiting both the Ismaili community and broader societies.

The 88-year-old Prince Karim Aga Khan passed away in Lisbon, Portugal. His funeral prayer will be held in Lisbon, and special prayers are being held in Ismaili Jamatkhanas worldwide. Until a new leader is announced, prayers will continue on the Ismaili community’s official website.

Prince Karim Aga Khan became the Imam at the age of 20 on July 11, 1957. His grandfather, Sir Sultan Muhammad Shah Aga Khan, was also a spiritual leader of the Ismailis. Throughout his life, Prince Karim worked to improve the lives of disadvantaged communities, emphasizing that Islam is a religion of compassion, tolerance, and human dignity.

The Ismaili community is mourning his loss. Prince Karim Aga Khan played a major role in guiding the community and leading welfare projects. The process of naming the 50th Imam of the Ismaili community has already been completed. Further details about the new Imam will be shared soon. Until then, prayers will continue on the official website.

Prince Karim Aga Khan was awarded Pakistan’s Sitara-i-Imtiaz and Sitara-i-Pakistan for his significant contributions.
