Prince Rahim al-Hussaini Aga Khan V was named the new spiritual leader of the Ismaili community on Wednesday. This follows the death of his father, Prince Karim al-Hussaini, Aga Khan IV, who passed away at age 88 in Lisbon.
The Aga Khan Development Network (AKDN) announced the change in leadership after opening the late Aga Khan IV’s will. The Ismaili community, which has been around for 1,400 years, is led by a hereditary Imam. There are around 12 to 15 million Ismailis in over 35 countries.
Prince Rahim was born on October 12, 1971. He is the oldest son of the late Aga Khan IV and his first wife, Princess Salimah. Prince Rahim is involved in various AKDN organizations and leads the AKDN’s Environment and Climate Committee.
After the death of Aga Khan IV, many world leaders expressed their condolences, remembering his humanitarian work. Aga Khan IV was known for his efforts to support the poor, especially in developing countries.
Last year, Prince Rahim received Pakistan’s highest civilian award, the Nishan-i-Pakistan. The award recognized his leadership in the AKDN and his work to improve lives in Asia and Africa.
