ISLAMABAD: The Federal Cabinet, chaired by Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, approved the issuance of a presidential ordinance on Friday to regulate the registration of seminaries, a private TV channel reported.
The cabinet approved two key presidential ordinances, one of which is the Societies Registration Amendment focused on seminary registration. The second is the Income Tax Ordinance, aimed at enabling the government to collect taxes from banks on additional profits of Rs 70 billion.
Prime Minister Sharif recently held a meeting with former President Asif Ali Zardari to discuss the seminary bill and other significant issues.
Last week, the federal government agreed to all demands put forward by the Ittehad Tanzeemat Madaaris Deenia (ITMD) regarding the seminary bill. The government assured that seminaries would be registered under the Societies Act, addressing the organization’s main concern. It was also confirmed that there would be no joint session of Parliament to discuss the matter.
A notification formalizing the agreement is expected to be issued soon, in line with proposed amendments under the 26th Constitutional Amendment.

The federal cabinet also approved amendments to the Income Tax Ordinance, which will impose heavy taxes on bank profits.
It should be noted that on December 16, the Ittehad Tanzeemat Madaaris Deenia called for the seminary bill to be formally enacted and its gazette notification to be issued without delay.
