Bushra Bibi’s Affidavit: Imran Khan’s Life Threatened in Attock Jail

ISLAMABAD: Bushra Bibi, the wife of former Prime Minister Imran Khan, has expressed grave concerns about her husband’s safety while incarcerated at Attock jail. In an affidavit submitted to the Supreme Court on Friday, she emphasized that Khan’s life is in peril within the confines of the prison where he is serving a three-year sentence following his conviction in the Toshakhana case earlier this month.

The affidavit, presented through advocate Hamid Khan, was filed as part of a case related to the trial of civilians in a military court. Bushra Bibi’s statement sheds light on the alarming state of Khan’s well-being while being detained.

Former PM Khan was imprisoned in August after receiving a three-year sentence in the Toshakhana case, which revolved around the sale of state gifts that he received from foreign dignitaries during his tenure from 2018 to 2022. The court’s ruling also imposed a five-year political ban on Khan.

Bushra Bibi’s affidavit detailed the challenges she faced to meet Khan in Attock Jail on August 22. She expressed concern about Khan’s physical condition, noting, “[The] PTI chairman’s arm muscles have also become very weak. It is dangerous at the age of 70. It is life-threatening.” She underlined that Khan remains steadfast in his commitment to the country.

Earlier on August 18, Bushra Bibi had already raised alarm about her husband’s security, pointing out the potential risk of poisoning in Attock jail. In a letter addressed to the Punjab home secretary, she referenced the court’s directive to transfer Khan to Adiala jail in Rawalpindi, asserting that it was within his legal rights.

Emphasizing Khan’s social and political stature as an “Oxford graduate and former captain of the national cricket team,” Bushra Bibi demanded B-class facilities for him in prison. She contended that the current conditions in Attock jail fail to provide the necessary amenities that Khan is entitled to.

Moreover, Bushra Bibi brought focus to two previous instances of attempted assassination on Khan, underscoring that the culprits remain uncaught to this day.

She restated her anxieties regarding Khan’s welfare, affirming, “Imran Khan’s life is currently under threat, and there exists an apprehension that he could be subjected to poisoning while incarcerated in Attock jail.” Additionally, she advocated for the provision of the privilege for her husband to have home-prepared meals, considering his stature as a former Prime Minister of the nation.
