ISLAMABAD : Supreme Court Justice Mazahar Ali Naqvi has resigned from his position, effective immediately.
Justice Naqvi’s resignation comes amid a pending complaint against him in the Supreme Judicial Council (SJC) on charges of corruption and incomplete asset details. Naqvi had filed a petition in the Supreme Court challenging the jurisdiction of the SJC, but the court rejected his petition on Tuesday.
In his resignation letter to President Arif Alvi, Naqvi said that he was unable to continue in his position “due to circumstances which are a matter of public knowledge and, to some extent, public record.” He also mentioned that “considerations of due process” compel him to resign.
Naqvi was appointed to the Supreme Court in March 2020. He previously served as a judge on the Lahore High Court.
Earlier, on Tuesday, the Supreme Court rejected Justice Sayyed Mazahar Ali Akbar Naqvi’s request to stay proceedings in the Supreme Judicial Council (SJC) against him over alleged misconduct.
