ISLAMABAD: Fawad Chaudhry, a senior leader of the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) party, was arrested by the Islamabad police outside the Supreme Court building. Central PTI leaders had been present in the court building since 11 am, refusing to leave due to fear of arrest.

The arrest was made under the 3MPO (Maintenance of Public Order) and Chaudhry was taken to the police station secretariat for further processing. To avoid arrest, Chaudhry stayed inside the Supreme Court building for nearly 12 hours. However, the PTI leader could be detained for up to 30 days under the provisions of the Breach of Peace Act.

Late in the evening, Chaudhry came out of the building and spoke to the media. He expressed his disappointment at the legal system, saying that the lawyers were so divided that the power of the lawyers was also lost. Chaudhry added that he was surprised by his arrest since his bail had been approved in the High Court the day before.

Chaudhry also highlighted the recent arrest of Imran Khan, which he claimed had been made within the confines of the court. He accused the government of focusing on suppressing political opponents.
