KARACHI: The Sindh government has canceled local government holidays and taken emergency measures ahead of expected monsoon rains in Karachi. The Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) predicts thunderclouds forming over the city later today or this evening.
Sindh Senior Minister Sharjeel Inam Memon announced the cancellation of local government holidays and assured preparations for quick rainwater drainage in vulnerable areas. He mentioned the deployment of dewatering pumps in low-lying parts and the establishment of a 24/7 Rain Emergency Centre.
Today, light rain is possible in Karachi, with a more intense spell expected on Sunday. PMD also anticipates another monsoon system affecting Sindh by late July.
Weather analysts earlier forecasted rainfall in Karachi from July 19 to 21, expecting thunderclouds to start forming on Saturday afternoon or evening.

The rain-bearing weather system, currently over southwestern Uttar Pradesh, India, is moving toward Rajasthan. Analysts suggest it could impact Sindh, including Karachi, by Friday night or later.
If the system continues westward, it may bring heavy rainfall to various Sindh districts. Currently, moderate rain is predicted for Karachi. Meteorologists continue to monitor the system’s path and potential effects on southern Pakistan in the coming days.
On Thursday, PMD forecasted rain and thunder in Karachi from Saturday onward as monsoon winds enter most of Sindh.
The system is expected to bring widespread rain on July 19, with thunderstorms likely in Tharparkar, Umerkot, Mirpurkhas, and Hyderabad. Rainfall is also expected in Tando Muhammad Khan, Sanghar, Badin, Thatta, and Sujawal.
