LAHORE: Punjab Chief Minister (CM) Maryam Nawaz Sharif chaired a special meeting to review progress on transport projects, especially the electric bus service under the Punjab Clean Air Program.
During the meeting, the CM ordered that more electric buses be sent to underdeveloped areas of South Punjab. She said remote districts must be given priority instead of always focusing on big cities.
“We must stop the trend of giving every new facility to major cities first. Our small towns and villages should get equal attention,” she said.
In the first phase, 240 electric buses will be sent to 24 priority districts. From August to October 2025, another 500 e-buses will be added to major cities like Lahore, Faisalabad, Bahawalpur, Multan, and Rawalpindi.

As part of this clean transport plan, the Punjab government will also set up 2,000 electric vehicle (EV) charging stations across the province. Initially, 600 electric buses will run in different cities after the successful launch in Lahore.
These developments were discussed during a video-link meeting led by Chief Secretary Zahid Akhtar Zaman at the Civil Secretariat.
Secretaries from the health and transport departments, the CEO of Lahore Waste Management Company attended in person, while divisional commissioners, deputy commissioners, and LDA Director General joined online.
The chief secretary asked deputy commissioners to identify land for EV charging stations and bus depots in their areas.
He said the aim is to provide modern, comfortable, and international-standard transport, as per CM Maryam Nawaz’s vision. He also directed officials to launch a strict campaign against overcrowded buses to ensure passenger safety.
