LAHORE: Fatima Jinnah Medical University (FJMU)/Sir Ganga Ram Hospital have upgraded their operation theatres, introducing modern laparoscopy services for emergency and admitted patients. The move aims to provide faster, safer, and more effective treatment.
According to the details, Laparoscopy is a minimally invasive surgical method known for causing less pain, fewer scars, shorter hospital stays, quicker recovery, and a lower risk of infection. It is used to treat gallstones, appendicitis, cancer, and for diagnostic purposes.
A special ceremony was held at the hospital on Friday to mark the launch of the upgraded facilities. FJMU Vice Chancellor Prof Dr Khalid Masood Gondal and Medical Superintendent Dr Arif Iftikhar officially inaugurated two new laparoscopes. Senior doctors, including former pro-vice chancellor Prof Kamran Khalid Khawaja, current HoD Prof Imran Aslam, Prof Qamar Ashfaq, and Dr Shabbir Chauhan attended the event.

An FJMU spokesperson shared that in 1991, a team including Prof Mahmood Ayaz and Prof Khalid Masood Gondal had performed Pakistan’s first laparoscopic cholecystectomy under the guidance of Prof Zafar Ullah Chaudhary, former president of the College of Physicians and Surgeons Pakistan (CPSP). This achievement played a key role in improving surgical practices in the country.
Speaking at the event, Prof Gondal said the operation theatre upgrade reflects the Punjab Chief Minister’s vision of providing advanced healthcare facilities at public hospitals.
He praised the university departments for their performance and said FJMU is the only public medical university in Pakistan accredited in all four subspecialties of obstetrics and gynaecology.
He added that patients are currently undergoing laparoscopic cholecystectomy at Sir Ganga Ram Hospital under the care of experienced surgeons. The new facilities, he said, allow patients to receive high-quality, patient-friendly care with faster recovery—often better than what is available in private hospitals.
