PARACHINAR : At least Seven teachers were killed in a shooting incident at a school in Parachinar, Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa (K-P) on Thursday, marking the second incident of firing reported from the Kurram agency in a single day. The total death toll in the district has now risen to eight.
The teachers were inside the staffroom, performing examination duties, when unknown assailants opened fire on them. Emergency measures have been imposed in all area hospitals.
The attackers are still at large and the motive behind the killings remains unclear. The teachers killed in both incidents belong to Pakistan’s Shia Muslim minority, which is often targeted by militant groups as part of the local Taliban movement.
Board examinations in Parachinar have been deferred for an indefinite period, but will be held as per schedule in the rest of Kurram district and surrounding areas.
Pakistan’s tribal regions have long served as safe havens for terrorists, and the proximity of Afghanistan has made the tribal regions a hub of militant activity.
The area has also been the birthplace of the TTP, the umbrella of terrorist groups responsible for most militant violence in the country.
