KARACHI: The world’s most expensive mango, called Miyazaki, is now being grown in Karachi’s Malir district. This rare mango is sold internationally for around $800 to $900 per kilogram — equal to about Rs250,000 to Rs300,000 in Pakistan.
Originally grown in Japan and a few other countries, the Miyazaki mango is famous for its deep red and purple skin, extra sweetness, and smooth, fiberless pulp. Its unique look and taste have earned it nicknames like “Egg of the Sun” and “Dinosaur’s Egg.”
A farmer named Ghulam Hashim Noorani, who lives in Memon Goth, Malir, started growing this mango last year. He imported the plant from Japan and successfully grew it in Karachi’s weather. This is now the second year he is harvesting fruit from it.
Ghulam Hashim said the tree adapted well to the local climate, and now the fruit is ready to sell. He plans to sell his Miyazaki mangoes this year at Rs300,000 per kilogram.
Agriculture experts say this is a positive step for Pakistan’s fruit industry. It introduces a high-value crop to local markets and also creates chances for export. If more farmers succeed in growing it, Miyazaki mangoes could become a valuable addition to Pakistan’s mango exports, which already include varieties like Sindhri, Chaunsa, and Anwar Ratol.

However, experts believe that growing Miyazaki mangoes requires more care, proper temperature, and special techniques. It is not an easy crop for every farmer, but with training and support, more production could be possible in future years.
The success of Ghulam Hashim Noorani has drawn attention from other mango growers in Sindh and Punjab, who are now showing interest in growing rare and premium mango varieties to increase profits and international demand.
