LAHORE: The Punjab Assembly has passed the “Punjab Thalassemia Prevention Act 2025.” This law requires all students in schools, colleges, and religious seminaries across the province to undergo testing for thalassemia and other genetic disorders at the time of admission.
As per the details, Under the new law, test reports must be submitted with admission forms. Sharing confidential information with unauthorized individuals will result in strict penalties.
The Punjab Information Technology Board (PITB) will create a database for all test results, monitored by an advisory council. Laboratories must send test results to PITB within 10 days.
Report say that Punjab government will provide free testing for poor families and counseling for affected students.

Experts say inherited diseases like thalassemia and hemophilia often spread due to cousin marriages, making screening essential.
The law is effective immediately and applies to all public and private educational institutions in Punjab. The bill will be sent to the Governor of Punjab for final approval.
In the near future, special patient registration and financial assistance arrangements are expected in collaboration with NADRA.
